Surgeons at the Westchester Medical Center announced this afternoon that they have performed their 500th liver transplant since the program began in 1996.
Dr. Patricia Sheiner, Director of the Liver Transplant program at Westchester Medical Center said she was very pleased the program reached this milestone.
“We focus so much on taking care of each individual patient, that we tend to lose track of the overall number of transplants,” said Dr. Sheiner.
The Medical Center is the only facility in the Lower Hudson Valley that performs solid organ transplants in children and adults. The hospital has done more than 2,000 kidney transplants. There are five such transplant hospital’s in New York State.
